The first mention of Turanj dates back to 1444, when the fortress of the Croatian nobles Meštrović was built, from which time the Kastel (tower), the main gate and part of the walls have been preserved. After that tower, Turanj got the name Toretta (according to the Latin: Turris - tower, tower), which over time got its present form.
