Šibenik is a city in northern Dalmatia, located at the confluence of the Krka River with the Adriatic Sea. It is the capital of Šibenik-Knin County and the oldest indigenous Croatian city on the Adriatic coast. It was mentioned for the first time in 1066 in the charter of King Petar Krešimir IV, which is why it is often called Krešimir's city. The official status of the city, which it received in the 13th century, is the main reason for the start of the construction of its main symbol, the Cathedral of St. Jakov, the famous buildings included in the UNESCO list of monumental heritage. The city of Šibenik is often called the City of Children because it has hosted the famous International Children's Festival for almost 60 years.

Culture

Šibenik is a city where history and culture meet in a fascinating and unusual way. It is full of interesting sights that you must not miss. One such landmark is certainly the symbol of the city of Šibenik, the cathedral of St. Jacob. This Renaissance cathedral is a protected UNESCO cultural heritage monument. It is special in its way of construction – it was built only of stone, without any binding materials. In addition to the cathedral, there are as many as 24 churches from the Middle Ages, Renaissance and Baroque in Šibenik - enough places for lovers of church architecture to visit. After exploring the cathedral, visit the Museum of the City of Šibenik, which is located in the Duke's Palace near the Cathedral of St. Jacob. More than 150,000 permanent exhibits and various audiovisual content will tell you an exciting story about this city. In addition to the permanent exhibition, the city museum often organizes exhibitions of paintings and photographs by important Croatian artists. We also recommend visiting one of the 4 Šibenik fortresses, located in strategic positions for the defense of Šibenik. The oldest fortress is St. Mihovila, built in the 11th century. In the last six years, it has also been used as a summer stage for concerts by world musicians such as Gregory Porter or the group The National. Fortress of St. Nicholas, at the entrance to the channel of St. Ante, it is surrounded by the sea, so it is best to reach it by boat. It was included, along with other important Venetian fortifications along the entire Adriatic, on the UNESCO list of cultural heritage in 2017. Return to the Middle Ages and to nature in the medieval garden in the monastery of St. Lovre in the center of the city. There you will be greeted by a lush and fragrant green garden divided into four fields with two paths and a fountain in the very center of the park. Capers, roses, thyme, fig trees and rose hips are also planted, maintained by local residents.

Gastronomy

The basic characteristics of Šibenik cuisine are fresh ingredients and simple preparation with a subtle touch of local spices and herbs (parsley, garlic, onions and bay leaves). The cuisine of the Šibenik area can be divided into two subtypes - the one that refers to the coastal and island part and the one characteristic of the continental part of the county. The cuisine of the coastal part of Šibenik-Knin County is mainly based on ingredients such as fish, shellfish and various seafood. Homemade olive oil is the main spice of most dishes, while salt and pepper are used in minimal quantities. The most famous specialties are fried fish, mussels on the buzara, brudet, as well as seafood risotto. The hinterland of this region leans towards continental cuisine, which is mainly based on meat and potatoes. The specialties of this part of Šibenik-Knin County are certainly roasted lamb and pork with roasted potatoes and salad, which can be found on the menu of every local restaurant. From traditional desserts, there are rožata, fritters, kroštula and faveta, which will satisfy the palate of almost every sweet tooth.

Sport and nature

As in many other popular destinations for active vacations, Šibenik-Knin County has excellent conditions for hiking, mountain climbing, cycling and scuba diving. However, this area offers much more variety and excitement, as well as numerous opportunities for exciting pleasure and energetic fun. The natural sights of the region almost compel you to move and explore every corner of the impressively hilly hinterland, the enticingly indented coastline and the inspiringly secluded islands.
