The story of Osijek inevitably begins in the Fortress, the most famous symbol of the city. It was built by the Austrians in 1712 after the expulsion of the Ottomans in order to prevent a new invasion as a defensive fortress. The construction lasted ten years, its purpose changed over the centuries, but from its completion until today, this monumental building has remained the center of life in Osijek. The best thing is that you can walk around this zero-category monument registered on the UNESCO heritage list, drink coffee inside the walls, visit the museum... Inside the fortress there are several faculties, the city administration, a monastery, the Museum of Slavonia... At any time of the day, the Fortress is alive and full of youth and students, and fortunately, an increasing number of tourists who discover this unique city. Among the numerous museums and galleries, the Museum of Slavonia, the Archaeological Museum and the Museum of Fine Arts, as well as the Waldinger, Kazamat and Barutana galleries stand out.
