Culture

The story of Osijek inevitably begins in the Fortress, the most famous symbol of the city. It was built by the Austrians in 1712 after the expulsion of the Ottomans in order to prevent a new invasion as a defensive fortress. The construction lasted ten years, its purpose changed over the centuries, but from its completion until today, this monumental building has remained the center of life in Osijek. The best thing is that you can walk around this zero-category monument registered on the UNESCO heritage list, drink coffee inside the walls, visit the museum... Inside the fortress there are several faculties, the city administration, a monastery, the Museum of Slavonia... At any time of the day, the Fortress is alive and full of youth and students, and fortunately, an increasing number of tourists who discover this unique city. Among the numerous museums and galleries, the Museum of Slavonia, the Archaeological Museum and the Museum of Fine Arts, as well as the Waldinger, Kazamat and Barutana galleries stand out. The Croatian National Theater in Osijek, as well as Branko Mihaljević's Children's Theater, have been Osijek's cultural brands for years, delighting theater lovers again and again with their creations for which they have won numerous awards.

Gastronomy

What to eat in Osijek and its surroundings after an exciting day full of new experiences? You know, traditional Slavonian and Baranja food! Don't miss shepherd's pie, kulen, fish, carp chips, various river fish specialties... The largest number of indigenous rural households with top-quality food is located in Baranja, on the way from Osijek to Kopacki Rit.

Sport and nature

Although we could spend days and days in the city itself, we cannot miss the opportunity to visit the nearby pearl of Baranja. Organize a trip to Kopački rit, because this nature park is one of the most preserved floodplains in Europe, home to numerous plant and animal species, so it is also called the European Amazon. You can visit Kopački rit on foot, by bike, by boat, and it would be best to take one of the guided tours during which you will hear all about this natural phenomenon from expert nature guards.
