About Poreč
Alongside Rovinj and Pula, Poreč, a town of around 17,000 inhabitants, is one of Istria’s most important coastal destinations. Its historic centre is a true Adriatic gem, set on a long, narrow peninsula and surrounded by old city walls. Just a few hundred metres offshore lies the island of Sveti Nikola, which forms a distinctive part of the town’s landscape. Things to see and do in Poreč

The harbour and waterfront
The seafront promenade is one of Poreč’s greatest assets. The Old Town is surrounded by the Lungomare promenade, offering a beautiful setting for a walk along the coast.
The harbour panorama gives Poreč much of its distinctive character, with historic walls, pastel-coloured townhouses, excellent restaurants and cafés, and luxury yachts. The promenade also connects the historic centre with beautiful coves and beaches along the coast, as well as the green peninsulas of Zelena Laguna and Plava Laguna.

Euphrasian Basilica
The Euphrasian Basilica, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997, is one of the most important cultural landmarks in this historic port town and Poreč’s best-known attraction.
Tucked away in a side street of the Old Town just beyond the main shopping area, the basilica replaced an earlier oratory dating back to the fourth century. The oldest parts of the complex date from the sixth century and can now be explored as part of the museum. Its beautifully preserved mosaics and column capitals are among the highlights of a visit.
The church and main square
Trg Slobode, or Freedom Square, is a popular venue for cultural events, concerts and smaller festivals, particularly during the summer. Located at the entrance to the Old Town, it is surrounded by a number of important landmarks and lively cafés where visitors can enjoy the atmosphere of the city.
The square is also home to the Church of Our Lady of the Angels, built in the 18th century. As the largest church in the city, it is particularly interesting for its beautiful paintings and interior.
Decumanus
Decumanus Street dates back to Roman times and is undoubtedly one of the most attractive places to explore in Poreč. This paved pedestrian street is lined with shops and boutiques, making it one of the town’s main shopping areas.
It begins east of the central Trg Slobode and runs through the historic district, passing a number of landmarks and notable buildings, including the Pentagonal Tower and the City Museum.

The towers of Poreč
Another distinctive feature of the Old Town is the series of historic Poreč towers. Only three towers remain from the defensive structures built between the 12th and 16th centuries.
The Pentagonal Tower in the shopping district is probably the best known. Today, its upper level is home to a café offering panoramic views over the surrounding area.
Matija Gubec Square
One of the most attractive squares in the Old Town, Matija Gubec Square, originally known as Piazza dei Signori, is a popular meeting place for both residents and visitors.
Several impressive historic buildings surround the square, including the charming Venetian Zuccato Palace, which combines Gothic and Baroque architectural elements. The western side of the square was unfortunately destroyed during the Second World War and is now occupied by a small park. A welcoming café also provides a pleasant place to relax and enjoy views of the Old Town.
The Romanesque House
The Romanesque House is one of the most fascinating landmarks in Poreč’s Old Town. Dating from the 13th century, it is one of the oldest houses in the city.
Located close to Marafor Square, this well-known architectural landmark can easily be missed while exploring the narrow streets. The lower floor once served as a stable, while the upper floor contained a large living room with a fireplace. Today, the building houses a small ethnographic exhibition.

Juraj Dobrila Park
The secluded Juraj Dobrila Park is one of Poreč’s hidden gems. This small green space lies in the heart of the historic district and offers a particularly charming atmosphere.
Roman remains in the centre of the square add to its unique character, while a bust of Bishop Juraj Dobrila can also be found nearby. The surrounding streets are home to a number of excellent restaurants and modern shops.
Sveti Nikola Island
Just 400 metres separate Poreč from the charming island of Sveti Nikola, which can be reached in only around five minutes by boat.
Despite its proximity to the town, the island has a peaceful atmosphere, with lush pine trees, landscaped gardens and a variety of beaches. It even has a small specially arranged sandy beach. One of the island’s greatest attractions is the beautiful view back towards Poreč.
Marafor Square
The small Marafor Square is tucked away in the upper part of Poreč. During Roman times, this area formed part of the forum and was home to two temples dedicated to Mars and Neptune, both dating from the first century.
Remains of the ancient temple complex survive today and can be visited free of charge.

Beaches in Poreč

The coastline offers everything from fine beaches to clear rocky coves and stretches of white pebble shore. Many of these beaches have been awarded the Blue Flag, recognising high standards of facilities, water quality and cleanliness.
Some of the best-known swimming areas can be found around Lanterna to the north and the Plava Laguna and Zelena Laguna peninsulas to the south. Two attractive beaches are also located close to the Old Town along the promenade, making it easy to combine sightseeing with swimming and sunbathing.
