About city

Rovinj in Istria is one of the most beautiful cities in Croatia. Whoever visits this magical city once, hardly forgets it and most often returns to it again. The beauties of Rovinj often leave a deep mark, so the connection with it extends for generations. Rovinj is located on the western side of the Istrian peninsula, and extends north of the Lim channel and south to Bal. It is adorned by an extremely indented archipelago with as many as 14 islets and 6 rocks. The most famous islands are Sveti Andrija (Red Island) and Sveti Katarina, close to the old town. There are hotels on both islands: Hotel Istra on the island of Sv. Andrije and Hotel Katarina on the island of Sv. Catherine. Rovinj is a prominent tourist center in Croatia and has been recording a record 3 million overnight stays during the season for several years in a row. Rovinj's beaches are typical for this part of the northern Adriatic. Most often, you will find rocky headlands and pebbly bays that repeat rhythmically along the 67 kilometers of Rovinj coastline. The Zlatni rt forest park, which is located in the southern part of the city, will also enchant you. Walking, running, cycling and swimming in the hundred-year-old protected park are unique experiences to remember.

Culture

It is wonderful to experience the old part of the city, rich in numerous Romanesque-Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, Neoclassical windows, balconies, balconies, gazebos (terraces on the roof), portals, staircases. Walking through the narrow streets and squares, we will be fascinated by the beauty of closely packed tall houses that support each other on the slope at the foot of the church of St. Euphemia. Once protected by secure early medieval and renaissance city ramparts, partially preserved to this day on the southern and northern sides of the old town. The second Sunday in August is a special day for Rovinj. In Grisia, the alley that connects the main town square and the Church of St. Euphemia, there is an explosion of creativity from early morning to late afternoon. Academic artists, amateurs and children together exhibit their works of art to the visitors who flock to the tiny alley. On that day in August, the street paved with shiny stone comes to life with a special glow. House walls, doors, windows and sheds are decorated with countless paintings, sculptures, installations and other colorful objects - the fruits of creativity of artists from all over Istria, Croatia and abroad. The works of art thus complement the wonderful mix of styles of old Rovinj buildings where Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque and Neoclassicism come together. In all the colorful art and decorations on the facades, you might also notice unusual chimneys. These are fumaioli, outdoor chimneys built when the population of Rovinj grew rapidly, so entire families lived in one room with a fireplace.

Gastronomy

In Rovinj and its surroundings you can enjoy delicious traditional dishes and excellent Istrian wines. Rovinj's restaurants will impress you with a selection of creative dishes made from fresh fish, crabs and shellfish, Istrian prosciutto, truffles or wild asparagus, and the sommeliers will recommend a glass of Istrian malvasia, chardonnay, white and pinot gris or red wines, such as teran, merlot and cabernet sauvignon. Without wood-fired bread ovens and quality ingredients, it is impossible to prepare a real Italian pizza. Countless restaurants in Rovinj offer pizza. See the list of pizzerias and restaurants that prepare the best pizzas in the city. Whether you want to taste indigenous food, meat and pasta dishes or fish dishes and other seafood, all with great Istrian wines, the best taverns are still the most exciting to discover on your own.
