Culture

The history of Umag is particularly interesting, in ancient times, it was discovered by Roman aristocrats, who adopted it as their summer residence. The luxury and glamor of the past can still be seen today in most of the Venetian houses that can be found in the old town of Umag. The city has preserved parts of the city walls and defensive towers, Renaissance and Baroque houses and churches. The most famous among them is the parish of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the church of St. Pilgrim. Umag is proud of its cultural heritage and galleries that are definitely worth visiting. The city offers numerous events throughout the year, from various concerts, plays, exhibitions, workshops to many other events for all tastes and ages.

Gastronomy

Yes, Istria is known for its gastronomy, and wherever you are, you will easily eat delicious and homemade food. However, Umag and the northwestern part of Istria stand out in particular. Nowhere will you find such a concentration of excellent taverns and restaurants. Most award-winning winemakers and olive growers are from these areas. Umag is surrounded by olive groves, vineyards, tomato fields, orchards, ... here people live for it and create products, and thus the gourmet scene, of the highest standards. Umag is primarily a fishing town. You cannot visit it without tasting seasonal fish specialties and seafood. Also, Umag and its hinterland are unsurpassed in the production of wine and olive oil, and they also offer an enviable number of quality restaurants, taverns and family homes where locals like to go.

Sport and nature

The city of Umag is known around the world as a "city of sports" due to the large number of sports associations and clubs, professional and recreational athletes, developed sports infrastructure and numerous future meaningful investment projects in the field of sports. There are 55 sports associations in Umag that are organized in the Sports Community of the City of Umag and two federations: Boćarski savez Umag and Football Center of Northern Istria. An indicator of the development of sports in a city is the number of sports that citizens have the opportunity to practice. In Umag, sports associations participate in 24 different sports. Of the 55 sports associations operating in the City of Umag, 33 are of a recreational nature. Special chapters in Umag sports are presented by top sports events: the ATP tennis tournament Croatia Open and a whole series of tennis championships, the HRS handball festival and the finals of the PH junior categories, the World Junior Karate Cup, the Istrian Spring and the Umag Trophy in cycling, Ultra-trail the "100 miles of Istria" race, numerous soccer tournaments and camps, sports fishing competitions with a long tradition and more.
