Culture

The most famous monument of Pula and the most valuable monument of the Roman period in the city is certainly the Arena. The amphitheater was intended for the fight between humans and animals, and was built in the first century AD during the time of Emperor Vespasian. The amphitheater is 130x105 meters in size and 32 meters high, which makes it the sixth largest among the world's amphitheatres. At that time, the amphitheater could accommodate 23,000 people, and today's events receive around 5,000 visitors. Ancient Pula resembled the Roman cities of that time. It had water supply, sewage, a forum, a capitol with temples, two theaters, houses decorated with mosaics and marble, and a large city cemetery. The city was surrounded by walls that had a dozen gates, and they collapsed at the beginning of the 19th century. Some entrances have been preserved, such as the popular Sergius Arch (Golden Gate). Slavuk was built by Slavia Postuma Sergi in honor of three of her relatives who were known for holding high official positions in the city at the end of the 1st century BC. Apart from them, two more gates have been preserved - the Double Gate and the Hercules Gate. The Forum was the central square in antiquity, and today it houses the Temple of Augustus, built between the 2nd century AD. before Christ and the 14th year A.D. On the eastern part of the Kaštel hill, the remains of parts of a small theater have been preserved.
