Material remains from the Roman period prove the existence of settlements in the area of ​​Jelsa. Several villas have been preserved in the area of ​​ Kutac, around Sv. Roka and in the bay of Church from Sv. Luke. On the mountainside overlooking Jelsa in the south is the massive Tor
fortress, which was a Greek observation post, and is located on an older
Illyrian fortress (4th-3rd centuries BC). The location is an ideal defensive
position because it overlooks the islands of Hvar and Brač all the way to
Šolta and the Makarska coast.
